If you are new to Pilates, or have come to Pilates for rehabilitation then I strongly recommend that you have at least one 121 session with myself before joining a group class as you will be taught the technique at a pace and level that is suitable for you as an individual.

If there are no complicated medical issues then it is safe to join a beginners and mixed level class and learn the Pilates technique within a group environment BUT it may take several sessions before you pick up the technique and principles.

You may need to attend 4 - 10 sessions or more before you really start to understand what Pilates is all about and start making progress with the technique and movements......

In a group class there are between 3 and 12 people working at different levels according to ability.  In every beginners and mixed level class I cover all the Pilates basics (click on 'what is Pilates' for the basics).  All the exercises are modified to begin with to teach you the Pilates technique safely.  I offer individuals the opportunity to try more challenge depending on experience and ability.

Pilates is about body control and mind over matter the exercises are slow precise and controlled. Everybody starts as a beginner and everyone can progress if they put their mind to it.

In every class you have to concentrate and be body aware, working only at the level that is CORRECT and SAFE for you - the technique takes time to master and a lifetime to perfect.

I vary the Pilates exercises that I teach each week in all my classes so you are always doing different combinations of exercises.  I ensure that the exercises use all the muscles in the body and mobilise all the joints of the skeleton so that by the end of the class you have had a full body work out.

All the beginner and mixed level classes are suitable for people with back and muscular skeletal issues on referral from medical professionals.

What is Post natal Pilates?

Bring your baby along! This gentle class is a great way to safely reintroduce exercise into your life post birth and a great way to make new mum and baby friends!

After the baby is born and you are cleared for exercise by your midwife - usually after 6 weeks you can start exercising your whole body again.

My post natal Pilates classes aim to gently recondition the body with a focus on strengthening the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor.

Some of the exercises can be done with your baby - or not if you prefer of if he or she is sleeping!

I also focus on teaching you the practical ways to carry and pick your baby up safely etc - minimisation the risk of back, joint or muscle injury.

The class is done to gentle relaxing music to soothe and calm your mind and keep baby relaxed.

This class is suitable for mums with diastasis recti, pelvic girdle pain (SPD) and back issues although you may need additional 121 lessons.

Courses cost £65 for a 10 week course or £10 per session (subject to demand) to drop in - please contact me to book your place

Sign up for a course and receive a Postnatal exercise work book.

What is Pregnant Pilates?

If you have been doing Pilates before your pregnancy then it is safe to continue through your pregnancy.  Current medical guidelines recommend that you should NOT start a brand new exercise technique during the first or last trimester of pregnancy.

Pilates specifically for pregnancy is a great way to keep your body in condition all the way through your pregnancy, it strengthens the body, mobilises the joints and keeps the muscles flexible.

In Pregnancy Pilates I focus on strengthening the deep postural and core muscles to help keep the pelvic floor strong and the lower back supported as the growing baby changes your posture and shape.

As your pregnancy progresses your body changes, one of the main changes is that the ligaments around your joints become more mobile due to the pregnancy hormone relaxin it is for this reason that stretching exercises are not advisable during pregnancy.

Pilates helps to keep your joints strong and mobile without the risk over-stretching.

I am not currently running pregnancy Pilates classes although I can offer this service as a 121 or for a small group - please contact me if you would like pregnancy specific Pilates lessons tailored for you and your friends
